So, you’ve decided to learn to read the Tarot…It’s an exciting decision to make! Though, choosing your first deck can be a tricky business. Lots of people advise to choose one that resonates with you, or you feel drawn to in some way…My advice is to go with a Traditional Deck first up.
The Tarot is a symbolic language. So, what you are really doing is beginning to learn a new language and it’s important starting out to get the basics right. To do this effectively you’ll need your first deck to be one that contains images based upon the classic texts.
Most of our current day Tarot books are based upon the teachings of The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The Golden Dawn was, or still is, an occult society formed in the late 1800’s. Its members studied the working of the Divine amidst the affairs of humankind. They conducted significant research into ancient texts, in search of the Tarot’s true meaning. The Golden Dawn have been one of the largest single influences on 20th century Western Occultism.
The Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot Deck was created by members of the Golden Dawn and unlike many of the beautiful old Italian decks it contains very relevant symbolic images for the Minor Arcana Cards. I would suggest that your first deck should be one that is modelled from the Rider-Waite-Smith Deck.
